Instead of 3 MH, I have used 2 MH on a 125.  The middle was dark, but
instead of growing something that needed a lot of light, I grew crypts and
anubias and kept my wood there.  I have pendant MH and I love them because I
can keep the tank open.  I have some set ups on my site.  I have effectively
used this method in both a South American tank and African tank that were
growing plants.  The lights are expensive, but the beauty over time pays for
itself.
