Call me sadistic, but I like to let the first few minutes of refill water 
(straight tap) run a little "cold". I direct this into the back corners or 
wooded areas of the tank and can usually see the shrimp swimming around in 
this cool stream,
plus if you use a fairly high pressured flow, they'll come out whether they 
want to or not....
I have put about 20 in my 55, I can usually "find" about 10 when I am 
looking.
