I found a faster method my last time around. I got a large square piece of
screen material. I used some fishing line to connect three of the corners
together. Then I pour in about 1/4 to 1/3 of a bag of flourite, then fold
the last corner up with the others. This makes a basket. Because it's
screen, the small dust and such just washes right away. I actually collected
the stuff that came off, and ended up with a pound or so of VERY nice sand.
I haven't figured out what to do with it yet, but it was too nice looking
to let go down the drain.
