Why no good fish/plants in DC (was getting plants LFS vs. online)

I just came back from a business trip to Austin, TX where I visited two
rather nice LFS: Amazonia and AquaTek. Both had nice CO2 display tanks and
knowledgeable help. AquaTek had large selection/displays of Eheim, Dupla,
and others. In fact both stores were way nicer than anything in the Metro
DC area!

I order almost all my hardware via the Internet from Pet Warehouse. Cheaper
by x2 sometimes than local and items often come overnight to me via standard
UPS. The few things PWH does not carry I usually get from other on-line
stores.

For livestock, I drive 50 miles to the Aquarium Center west of Baltimore. I
occasionally find a nice plant locally, but the bulk I have ordered from
Arizona Aquatics Gardens and Florida Driftwood. Quality from both blew me
away.

Living near DC, I thought the LFS was dead. They were better when I was a
kid growing up in Cleveland. I know that the supply of disposal income is
greater in DC than Austin. I’m spending kilobucks per year. I would pay a
small premium to buy/consult locally. Why can’t a major city like
Washington support even one premo LFS?

(First lawsuits and then women. You guys are absolutely fearless!)
