Jeff,
    Borax  (sodium borate, Na2B4O7. 10H2O) softens hard water and in
solution has an alkaline reaction.  Check ph and water hardness for any
changes. It is readily water soluble so, if needed,  water changes will
get it out of the tank. Boron is a micro trace element necessary to
plants but I don't know what its toxicity to plants at higher levels is.
Please keep the box of arsenic away from the bag of sugar :>)  Hope this
