I set up a small tank with a soil substrate 1 week ago.  I followed the directions on Steve Pushak's website.  When I went to find fluffy Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss I only found Candaian Sphagnum Peat moss in 1 cubic foot bags.  When I opened the bag the peat looked like it had been compressed to fit in the bag.  Some pieces were small and dustlike.  Others were like clumps of dirt and hard.  I tried to break these pieces up.  There were little bits of stems the same color as the peat moss. Since I'm not exactly sure what peat moss is maybe these stems are part of the plant.  When I mixed it with the soil I don't think it significantly loosened the soil up. Is this what Fluffy Canadian Sphagnum Peat moss is supposed to look like?  The brand was Fertilome.
