I considered an acrylic tank also.  There are some really cool shapes.

Unfortunately, they scratch very easily, algae gets in the scratches and it
is a pain to try to get scratches out.  If there are small children around,
I wouldn't even think about it. The Chiquita banana sticker that is
currently on my 26 isn't a big deal but some of the things kids do to a tank
will wreck havoc on acrylic! On the other hand though, there is less
distortion and weight.

I would try to stay with glass personally.  There are some very cool glass
tanks.  I love my corner one!  That however, is MY opinion only.
