For all their sometimes exotic beauty, goldfish tend to become big, dirty
fish and it is important that any tank housing them be easy to clean and
maintain. A substrate composed of large rounded glass disks or marbles
sounds like the perfect environment for uneaten food and feces to collect
and get trapped in the large voids between the individual marbles and could
become a source of endless frustration if you are at all concerned with
keeping your pets home clean and healthy.
