Should have added to my last message that I think snails mostly process fish
poop, with a bit of algae clean-up on the leaves at the stage before it
becomes eg a green spot algae; they may do a bit of work on the actual
algae, but its sort of a trail through it, rather than getting it all.  They
are better as a preventative than a clean-up crew in my view.  Although I am
a bit over-run, I think they do a good job - the trick is to keep the
population manageable, and the best answer I've found so far is to use
zucchini slices to collect them in one spot, and physically remove them,
regularly!
