Roger, Spar Urethane should be fine to use on your stand. Actually, in
recent years the choices of finishing materials which would work well have
greatly expanded. Some of the newer water based finishes seem to be totally
unaffected by water and are a breeze to use and clean up after. I used one
made by Flecto a few years ago on a large Oak hood (inside and outside the
hood) and the finish remains as good as the day it was done.
