I purchased my tank locally from a guy who works for a gas company and as a
sideline sells co2 to a lot of guys who keep kegs at home bars. Wash the
cylinder. You can spray paint it if you want. The old ones are fine. One
reason to swap is convenience. Another reason to swap is that all gas tanks
by law have to be hydrotested for leaks and cracks. Swapping makes sure your
old tank gets back in the retailer's system and is tested. This also makes
sure that your full tank has been tested. I think it is worth swapping for
the safety benefit if nothing else.
