I had a very bad filamentous algae problem similar to what Chin described.  Long flowing strands that would not go away and also poor plant growth.  See my previous post

Based on advice from Tom Barr and Steve Dixon and Gordon ??? (sorry, don't remember your last name :), I added stump remover (aka KNO3) and increased my dosage of TMG.  It seemed counter-intuitive to me but it was amazing.  Within a few days of the increased fertilization all of the filamentous algae was gone!!  Just another example of this lists usefulness in helping each other.  Thanks guys!!

 Now my only problem is that I still am fighting green water that insists on being a permanent part of my tank...  :)
