Plants and Iron (a bit OT)

I thought that Aquatic-Plants folks might be
interested in, and be knowledgeable readers of, the
following dispatch from some co-workers of mine who
are measuring iron concentrations and plant growth
rates in the middle of the Pacific Ocean:

http://www.mbari.org/education/cruises/Hawaii/Leg5/May28.htm

This is the online log from their research cruise. If
you don't mind reading past a bit of the "looseness"
that comes from being on a small boat in a big ocean
for a couple of weeks, there are a couple of
interesting paragraphs in there about iron regulating
phytoplankton growth in the ocean... at
parts-per-TRILLION concentrations. If you're
interested, you can surf to other parts of the log and
pick up other parts of the iron-and-plants story.
