Silicate really shouldn't be an issue.  All clay minerals are
silicates.  Sand and gravel is mostly silicate.  Besides, dissolved
silica is a common component in fresh water.  I don't expect it would be
limiting to diatom growth unless you have very fresh water (as in the US
northwest), or you use RO, DI or distilled water in your tank.
