I'd say that snails will eat both viable and
non-viable eggs. I noticed lots more tetra fry after
removing snails for hydra treatment (I know, the hydra
may have been eating them too, but I didn't
reintroduce snails for some time afterward).
Actually, I don't see why they wouldn't eat viable
eggs.
