The water line that heater companies but on their heaters
is there to tell you they do not want the water line below
that mark but instead above that mark. If the water line falls
below that mark the heater will overheat (due to no heat dissipation
into the water). Here is a good way I found to distinguish between
submersible and non-submersible heaters. The heaters that are made
to hang on the edge of your tank with a locking nut are non-submersible.
Not to say there are not companies out there that would do this, but,
who in their right mind would make a non-submersible heater with two
suction cups and pray to god that people pay attention to the water
line on the heater. Hope this helps.
