I used 1 teaspoon per bottom surface area

I started my 10 gallon tank on Dec 23 with a DIY CO2 and I haven't had any
problems. I used Hartz pH5 litter as this is the one brand I heard of the
most.
My substrate is Kitty Litter covered with #3 Silica Sand.
You may want to visit Dan Quackenbush's site www.aquariumplants.net for more
information. He discusses substrate in part 2 ofhis article on Low Tech
Aquariums.
