Hmm. Just reading some more posts about the thick wire and had an idea...

If you really want some thicker wire, try one of the small Teflon coax 
cables like RG188. You get a cable that is about 2-3 mm diameter, and has a 
shield. Used as-is with just the center conducter connected to power you 
essentially have a wire with extra insulation. The shield could be 
connected to ground for added safety (remember that then the ground must 
also be bonded to one leg of the low-voltage side of the transformer to 
allow a fuse to blow if something happens).

Just a thought...
