snails

i bought a bag of gravel from my lfs that had twisty spiral shells in it. a
couple of months later, when i used this gravel in a forty gal setup, the
shells, which i thought were dead, came to life. are these are malaysian
trumpet snails? they seem to act like mts... i didn't know that aquatic
snails can stay dehydrated in their shells for long periods of time... i
don't know the source of the gravel, hopefully the snails aren't vectoring
any diseases/parasites. is this possible?
