Nematodes in Soil. Harmful to plants?

I was at Karl Schoeler's website today looking for information on
substrate gold. I saw it written that the product was free of nematodes.
I had been thinking of using my own subsoil that I dug off a hill. How
much should I worry about nematodes from outdoor soil? Can they destroy
plant roots? Is there a good way to disinfect the soil. I'm setting up
several tanks so soil/sand is cheap for me. But I may consider Substrate
Gold now. It just seems rather expensive.
