I find the black water additives do more in the way of darkening the water,
but not softening or acidifying, and the peat softens and acidifies, but
doesn't color the water much. Dark water additives are pretty cheap, and
color significantly, but that's all. Peat granules are most expensive as peat
products go, but pack the most power.
