I had just this scenario occur in one tank. And it was a horror, until 
I introduced Jordanella floridae. They held the stuff at bay until I 
could get the plants growing well again, and then they finished it off 
and it hasn't come back. (Another flag fish plug.) BTW, there was 
no black beard algae.
