Gordon, Your Hagen Powerhead 804 is probably defective. I have a smaller 404 and cannot use it in a tank of similar size as yours (3ft x 16" x 20"). It just blows away everything in the tank, even when the flow rate control is throtled back all the way. -Ivo Busko Baltimore, MD
