I was thinking about this kind of thing myself. You could just use kitty litter as substrate, and also maybe do emersed plants even house plants instead of aquatics. Big primulas (low light) some lobelia c., Philodendrons. Any big boggy loving topical houseplants. Maybe more effective, (all low light).
